Luffa Sponges are grown from seed on a vine that looks like a cucumber. Seeds are planted after the threat of frost is past, and after a very long growing season, the mature Luffas turn brown and become very light. Once harvested, they are soaked in water until the skins slip off. Then they are rinsed with clean water and set out to dry. Once dry they are ready to use, just run warm water over them briefly and enjoy.

Most imported Luffa sponges are unbearably uncomfortable on your skin. They are very hard as a result of fumigation and harsh bulk chemical processing before they are imported. At Luffa Gardens, we actually grow the sponges and process them by hand without the use of any harsh chemicals right here on our farm. Our type of preparation allows the Luffas to maintain their natural softness and organic excellence.

Many places selling imported Luffa (Loofah) sponges want you to throw away your sponge at least every month.  In our opinion, you will probably throw it away after the first use because it is so harsh on your skin. We believe these other suppliers are just trying to get you to buy more of their inferior sponges in order to make more money by using scare tactics.

 When you purchase "Luffa Gardens" organic naturally grown and hand processed Luffa (Loofah) sponges, you are in for a great experience. We personally have used many of our Luffa sponges for 3 months, and even some of our Luffa Sponges for more than a year. We DO recommend cleansing them regularly by washing them with soap (which you probably do already when you use it) or by throwing it in the dishwasher or washing machine on occasion (make sure to ONLY air dry your Luffa). In the shower, we recommend adding a rope to the Luffa sponge in order to hang it up so it will air dry quicker between showers.

Luffa sponges if kept dry will store indefinitely. Make sure to add a couple to your survival stash!

At "Luffa Gardens", we love using our natural organic farm raised Luffa sponges "in" our handmade soap. When we make some of our soap, we gently insert a Luffa sponge into the top layer of soap as it is curing. When you use Luffa embedded soap, you get the best of two worlds. First the soap, which is naturally moisturizing, helps to release the grime from your skin. Then second, the embedded Luffa helps to exfoliate your skin in a gentle and luxurious way. When the soap is gone, you will be left with a small Luffa sponge that you can continue to use for exfoliating or just general cleaning.
